Abstract: The objective was to evaluate the zootechnical and reproductive performance of Nile tilapia dams of Thai and GIFT strains, in different weight classes, to define the ideal strain and weight for commercial reproduction and larviculture. 120 Nile tilapia females from the Thai lineage and 120 from the GIFT lineage were used, divided into six weight groups (20 females each), as follows: with average initial weight of 300g, 500g, 700g, 900g, 1100g and 1300g. The fish of each strain and weight group were kept in cages arranged in masonry tanks with an earthen bottom, in a greenhouse with a water recirculation system at 28°C. The animals were fed until apparent satiety with a commercial diet with 38% of crude protein, and 3000 kcal kg-1 of digestible energy. During the reproductive period, both strains were housed with males of the GIFT strain of approximately 600g, in a 2:1 ratio, remaining for 7 days and, subsequently, resting for 14 days. Collections were carried out for 6 months. As for the zootechnical performance, the final weight of the sows, total length, standard length, height and width were evaluated. As for the reproductive performance, the visceral, hepatosomatic, gonadosomatic index, egg weight, number of eggs, absolute fecundity, relative fecundity, spawning index and number of hatched eggs were evaluated. The data were subjected to factor analysis (strains x weight groups, ?=0.05), and when differences were found between the means, the Tukey test (?=0.05) was performed. The Thai strain showed the greatest growth in the reproductive period, but the GIFT strain was more efficient in reproductive performance, and the weight group with approximately 900g is the most suitable for obtaining satisfactory results for reproduction and larviculture on a commercial scale.
