A collection of drawings by D.P.G. Humbert de Superville, most of them done in relation to his art historical theories and his lectures at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Amsterdam. The prints are by various artists and have a documentary value in relation to Humbert’s work.

Custodial History
The collection was bequeathed by the artist to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Amsterdam.
The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, originally known as the Royal Institute, was founded in 1808 by Louis Napoléon, King of Holland. Based in Amsterdam, it is one of the major research institutes in the Netherlands in the fields of Life Sciences, Social Sciences and the Humanities.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
At what date the collection was given as a loan to the Leiden Print Room is unknown. There are documents at the Academy in Amsterdam that suggest this already happened in 1853 at the request of the director of the Leiden Print Room, J.L. Cornet. The documents however do not specify which works were given in loan and if they were to be returned in a short time. Another document in the archives of the Print Room refers to the year 1939 as the start of the loan.

No additions are to be expected.
Separated Materials
[The University Library also houses the KNAW Collection of oriental manuscripts, given on loan in 1856.] Besides the drawings and prints of Humbert de Superville that are now in Leiden, the KNAW also owns a great number of manuscripts (including some drawings) that were given in loan to the Royal Library in The Hague in 1937. The prints and drawings are kept as a separate collection of drawings and prints. Since they were catalogued in 1984, their inventory numbers start either with PK-1984-T (for the drawings) or PK-1984-P (for the prints).
