Black History: Super Marketplace

A scripted studio recreation of a marketplace – of knowledge as well as goods – for elementary or middle school students. Program includes a dramatization of a scene from "They Came Before Columbus: The African Presence in Ancient America" (1976), by Ivan Van Sertima; a demonstration of talking drums; a visit to the Great Blacks in Wax Museum in Baltimore (then a grassroots operation in a downtown storefront), founded in 1983 by Dr. Elmer Martin and his wife Dr. Joanna M. Martin, who conducts the tour;  a visit to the Afro-American Heritage Museum in Charles County (founded in 1980) with curator William D. DIggs; and a discussion of Black American inventors. Actors: Gorham F. Scott, Mark Murray-Mazwi, Ron Canada, Darrell Taylor, William Godsey, Kokahvah Zauditu-Selassie. Mary Carter Smith, Baltimore griot (storyteller), and artist Robert McQueen play themselves. Drummers: Joseph Nu Ayitey Quay, Saeed Abdul-Samad, Jamal L. Shareef. Written by: A.
