The International Women's Brass Conference was created in 1992 by Susan Slaughter as a community of women brass musicians working to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the arts. This collection includes materials from conferences, their newsletters, and materials from their Annual Holiday Brass Concerts, in addition to other administrative records.
The collection is open for research use. Materials from this collection must be used in the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library's Irving and Margery Morgan Lowens Special Collections Room during SCPA’s operating hours. Copyright was not transferred to the University of Maryland with the gift of any copyrighted materials. All rights remain with the creators and rights holders. This collection includes materials recording the operations of the International Women’s Brass Conference (IWBC), establishing the IWBC records at SCPA. The collection includes records of the tri-annual conference, the annual Holiday Brass Conference, and the bi-annual newsletter, in addition to administrative documentation.
The International Women's Brass Conference (IWBC) was created by Susan Slaughter, retired former principal trumpet with the St. Louis Symphony. In 1989, Slaughter began plans for an organization to recognize and unite women brass players from around the world in concert with fellow women brass player.
In 1992, the IWBC Board of Directors and Honorary Board of Directors were established. The following year, the first conference was held in St. Louis, Missouri on the campus of Washington University. The organization intends to educate, develop, support, and promote women brass musicians and inspire continued excellent and opportunities around the world.
The newsletter, NoteWorthy, is published biannually to serve the membership with articles on performance, pedagogy, historical preservation, and job opportunities. The IWBC held conferences in 1993, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2019, and 2022. Their Holiday Brass Concert (HBC) was first held in St. Louis, Missouri in 1992. They were subsequently held in Baltimore, Maryland; Houston, Texas; and Los Angeles, California.
The IWBC supports outstanding musicians through the Susan Slaughter Solo Competition. It also supports young musicians through the Ginger Turner Ensemble Competition, the Penny Turner Young Artist Award, and the Marie Speziale Mock Orchestra Audition Competition, as well as mock service band audition competitions. In 2021, the IWBC established its formal Mentorship Program.
This collection is organized into four record groups.
