Abstract
ATM is one of the most promising multiplexing and switching technologies for the future B-ISDN infrastructure. One of the important features of ATM is its ability to give QoS guarantees. To enable ATM to deliver the proposed QoS guarantees while efficiently utilizing the underlying network resources, one must have some proper methods to analyze the performance of the ATM network. In this thesis, we studied the traffic characteristics in the ATM networks and the traffic modeling. To do this, we used the superposition of MMPP(2)s to model the multi-rated, bursty and correlated characteristics of multi-media traffic carried by the ATM networks. The parameters of MMPP (2) s are estimated from the ATM traffic measured directly from the network at cell level. We use MMPP/M/l/K to analyze the queueing performance of a server. To make a single server analysis applicable the network, we proposed a method to obtained the output MMPP parameters of an individual connection based on time series analysis. The results obtained from MMPP/M/l/K modeling are compared to the results obtained from classical M/M/l/K modeling.
