Abstract: According to the World Health Organization, people with disabilities constitute around 24% in Brazil, which would correspond to 45.6 million among the 193 million Brazilians. The direct relationship between oral health and general health is evident, as well as the absence of proper hygiene habits as a complicating factor for these people. Thus, health workers, in general, should turn their attention to People with Disabilities (PWDs), to contemplate their needs. The dental care of the PWD requires more than scientific skill, requiring from the professional a lot of patience, welcoming and emotional preparation. Although emotion permeates clinical activity, in dentistry this is not a topic of focus in the dental literature. The realization of the importance of the qualification of humanized care in dentistry is inseparable from the perception of the professional about his own emotions. Thus, the concern of this research was to understand the experience of the dentist who works in primary care in the care of patients with special needs, thus contributing to the process of qualification of care to these patients. The research was carried out in a city located in the Midwest region of São Paulo and its universe was the 40 dentists who develop their activities in the Family Health Strategy of the municipality. Of these, 12 were interviewed, with the closing of the interviews by the theoretical saturation technique, based on the qualitative and detailed approach by the Clinical-Qualitative Method. The theoretical framework was based on the psychodynamic processes of the health clinic discussed by Michael Balint, which allowed exploring the emotional meanings attributed by dentists in the management of care for special patients in a primary health care service. Three articles were elaborated: a review of the scope of the literature to support the field research, which presented the emotions of the dentist, expressed in feelings of satisfaction, sadness, confidence, gratitude, powerlessness, among others, and the two articles elaborated after our interviews: "From protocol to clinical practice: a qualitative study of the meanings of the special patient for the dentist" and "The dentist and special patients in primary health care: a qualitative study" that corroborated the literature review study, pointing out the feelings of the professional, often antagonistic, and the impact on their daily work. It is concluded that the scientific literature is lacking with regard to the emotions and feelings of the dentist, that the perception of the dentist about the care of the special patient in a primary health care service revealed diverse and sometimes antagonistic emotions, and that the emotional impact is well evidenced in the care of this patient and is reflected in the statements of the interviewees in this study, with feelings ranging from relief to rejection. It is suggested the establishment of public policies with strategies that offer spaces and tools to welcome and strengthen this dental professional, especially in the care of special patients, and thus point out another path towards a satisfactory oral health to the PWD
