Resumo: Neste trabalho discutimos as concepções fIlosóficas referentes à beleza, dando principal ênfase à compreensão de beleza humana. Buscamos traçar as relações que se estabeleceram entre beleza e mulheres ao longo da história do Ocidente e, para isso, analisamos a história da condição feminina nas sociedades ocidentais. Demonstramos que as imagens de beleza socialmente promovidas sempre vieram associadas a qualidades morais, positivas ou negativas, que serviram àmanutenção de uma determinada relação entre os gêneros, denominada por Bourdieu de dominação masculina. Os gêneros constituem, assim, a divisão de papéis sociais fundamentada na diferença anatômica dos sexos, a partir da qual se inferem diferenças culturalmente estabelecidas. Nesse duplo processo de socialização do biológico e de biologização do social, a beleza tem sido sistematicamente associada, especialmente a partir da Idade Média, à "natureza" feminina. Quando a filosofia passa a privilegiar a discussão estética, fenômeno observado particularmente no século XX, a beleza perde seu estatuto de discurso acadêmico e é relegada cada vez mais ao âmbito do senso comum. Este se apropria de concepções filosóficas para justificar conceitos de beleza que, em sua origem, não se aplicam às mulheres; servem, no entanto, para sustentar uma pseudo neutralidade s6cio-política dos padrões de beleza

Abstract: In this work we discuss philosophical conceptions about beauty, emphasizing the understanding of female beauty. We search the relationships between beauty and women established along the western history; to accomplish our goal, we ana1yze the history of female condition in the western societies. We prove that the socially promoted beauty images have been ' always associated to moral qualities, positives or negatives, which served to maintain a certain kind of gender relationship ca1led by Bourdieu the male domination. Genders represent the social role division based on the sex anatomica1 differences, from which we infer cultural established differences. In this double process of biological socialization and social biologization, beauty has been systematically associated to female "nature", especially since the Middle Age. When philosophy begins to privilegiate the aeshetical discussion, which occurs especially on the twentieth century, beauty loses its academical discourse condition and is banished to the popular sense sphere. This sphere use philosophica1 conceptions in order to justify beauty conceptions that, in their origin, do not apply to women; nevertheless, they serve to sustain a pseudo-social-political neutrality of beauty patterns
