Abstract: We start from the historical-cultural diagnosis of modernity by Michel Foucault (1926-1984) through his reading of Immanuel Kant's work (1724-1804), concentrating on the initial period of reception of the German philosopher by the French, namely, the period which is often referred to as "archaeological", taking as key texts the Introduction to Anthropology of Kant (1961) and The Order of Things (1966). At first, the goal is to understand the emergence, in Kant, of the modern paradigm of thought of the human finitude, by virtue of which it begins to be conceived "from itself" (i.e. without the tutelage of a transcendent instance); at the same time, we present the emergence of the figure of the "empirical-transcendental double" (man thought simultaneously as subject and object) and of the confusions and aporias that arise from this new status of the human being. Within this horizont, we have examined Kant's work meticulously (and relatively independently of Foucault's strict reading), presenting the difference and articulation between the transcendental (fundamental) instance of human reason and the empirical-anthropological (temporal) of human existence - through which the factual dimension proper to anthropology then appears as the open space of a "doing", the force field whose poles are "objectification" and "subjectivation", truth and freedom. Secondly, we present the anthropological constitution of modern thought and the criticism that Foucault addresses to it. It is necessary both to understand the displacement of modernity from the classical paradigm of Representation and to investigate the ways in which post-Kantian thought is entangled in an empirical-transcendental confusion
