Abstract: The present dissertation aims at discussing the relationship between consumption and culture within the interpretations of Gilberto Freyre and Celso Furtado about the national formation. A dialogue between these authors was sought, mobilizing both discourses from the point of view of the problem of modernization, in general, and the consumption patterns, in particular. For that, the text recovers the essential features of Freyre¿s readings and Furtado¿s readings about the national formation and the process of modernization that crosses it. The text also synthesizes the consumption and cultural statutes in both narratives, stressing the main proximities and differences between both interpretations. The aim is a general apprehension of these processes, that is, of the underlying actors and dynamics and their main effects over the formation of the economic, social and cultural dynamics
