Abstract: This thesis is the result of a research whose main objective was to verify the existence or not of a line of historical continuity and linguistic cultural transmission joining the Nheengatu spoken / registered in the Middle Amazon River in the 18th and 19th centuries, with the variant currently spoken in the same region, albeit by a small group of speakers. The proposal is to study this variety, highlighting the cultural and linguistic aspects, from the comparison between the written records of Nheengatu in the 18th and 19th centuries and the current registration of the language. In addition, it seeks to promote the activation of the lexical memory of current Nheengatu speakers, in order to contribute to the process of strengthening the language. The main corpus of investigation was the work Poranduba Amazonense, by João Barbosa Rodrigues (1890) and the Dicionário de Língua Geral Amazônica, published in 2019, but which contains data from the 18th century. Four narratives and songs, selected from Poranduba Amazonense, by Barbosa Rodrigues (1890), were transcribed to current Nheengatu by the language speakers in the region: "O curupira e uma mulher"; "O Jurupari e as moças"; "A Mucura e a Ariramba"; "A origem das Plêiades"; "Cantigas do Çairé", and "Cantigas do Makuru". From the systematization of the collected data, some signs of obsolescence were analyzed, as well as persistence marks found in the narratives, collected from the current speakers of the language, such as: the occurrence of the high central vowel 'i' and the aspiration in verbal flexion in the first person of the singular subject 'ha-'; the identification of lexicons characteristic of this variety (the verb iwas?n and the term Suassureçá, to designate a fruit from the region); similarity between the Nheengatu lexicon and the Sateré-Mawé language, indigenous languages that share the same geographical space in the region.
