Abstract: Semiconductor WO3/TiO2 electrodes, irradiated by a solar simulator, were used for remediation of aqueous solutions of ciprofloxacin (CIP), a widely used antibiotic. First, a porous WO3 film was electrodeposited in stainless steel (SS); after, a film of TiO2 nanoparticles (25 nm) was deposited on the SS/WO3 surface. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a uniformly cracked surface for the WO3 film, with islands ranging from 10 to 35 µm. The TiO2 particles, that covered the SS|WO3/TiO2 surface, smoothed the mood cracked morphology. The electrodes photoelectrochemical properties were evaluated under intermittent simulated solar irradiation in Na2SO4 aqueous solution. At +0.4 V (vs Ag/AgCl), the photocurrent values exhibited by SS|WO3 and SS|WO3/TiO2 electrodes respectively corresponded to 10 and 60 µA cm-2, indicating the enhancement of sunlight harvesting due to the association of both semiconductors. The SS|WO3/TiO2 electrodes (8 cm2) were used for remediation of 25 mL of CIP aqueous solutions (initial concentrations: 66, 99 and 166 µmol L-1) by heterogeneous photocatalysis (HP) and also by electrochemically assisted HP (EHP), with inclusion of a Pt counter-electrode and application of +0.4 V. During the first 240 min, the relative CIP concentration exponentially decayed by HP and EHP; however, the estimated apparent first-order rate constants (kap) decreased with the enlargement of initial CIP concentration. Thus, the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) model was considered, and a linear variation was found for the reciprocal of the initial rate with the reciprocal of CIP initial concentration. For HP configuration, the "constant of reactivity" k estimated from the linear coefficient corresponded to 2.3 µmol L-1 min-1, and the "adsorption constant" K was 3.2 µmol L-1. The EHP resulted in a higher value for k (3.7 µmol L-1 min-1) and lower K (2.1 µmol L-1), indicating that EHP was more effective for CIP removal. After remediation for 240 min at the HP configuration, CIP (C17H19FN3O3, m/z 332.1400) and two transformation products, TP1 (C13H12FN2O3, m/z 263.08) and TP2 (C16H17FN3O4, m/z 334.11) were detected by LC-HRMS, analysis; also, the remaining antimicrobial activity, reduced in 57 %, was coherent with CIP removal (67 ± 2 %). For control experiments, irradiation removed 18 ± 1 % of CIP by photolysis and TP3 (C17H20N3O4, m/z 330.14) was also identified. Finally, CIP, TP1 and TP2 were also detected in the solution remediated by EHP for 240 min; CIP removal corresponded to 80 ± 2 % and the antimicrobial activity was reduced in 79 %. Thus, semiconductor SS|WO3/TiO2 electrodes in electrochemically assisted HP configuration can be considered a promising alternative for removal of CIP and probably other antibiotics persistent pollutants and contaminants of emerging concern from aqueous environments.
