Abstract :
[en] The potential flame retardant effect of metallic phytates, as agro-sourced phosphorous additives for poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is evaluated. Starting from sodium phytate, sodium cations were completely substituted by aluminum, iron or lanthanum cations. PLA-metallic phytate composites were prepared and their fire properties, themogravimetric resistance and PLA chain degradation during processing are characterized. The most significant flame retardant effect, observed during cone calorimeter test, is obtained with aluminum phytate. However, aluminum phytate is shown to be responsible for PLA degradation during melt processing. The partial substitution of aluminum phytate by sodium phytate overcome this negative effect while preserving good fire performances.
