Abstract :
[en] Between residential and manufacturing premises: a study of late 19th century bourgeois houses on the boulevards of Mons Between 1830 and 1850, the industrial development of the Centre and Borinage coal-mining regions promoted the rise of a capitalist bourgeoisie in the Belgian province of Hainaut. Rivalling the noble class, they had 'chateaus' built close to the mines. Under pressure from merchants and industrialists, the City of Mons (the provincial capital) had the city's old fortifications demolished to make room for a 'major manufacturing and commercial centre'. The new boulevards created a port zone for the 'city's industrial dream'. The urbanization of the outskirts of Mons offered a number of advantages for a population of entrepreneurs wishing to both take up residence and set up their businesses or factories there. A number of industrialists purchased plots of land both for their houses and their business activities. These private initiatives explain the area's real estate diversity, with mansions interspersed with large warehouses. The ingenious design of the dual carriageway boulevards enabled Mons to divide up traffic, with the wide boulevard carriageway reserved for 'promenading' and the other carriageway for 'heavy' goods vehicles. Did this dual configuration influence the construction of homes on the outer side of the 'boulevard' (guaranteeing prestige and comfort) and the location of industrial buildings on the inner side of the goods carriageway (useful from a logistics and commercial perspective)? Studying the different establishments (craft workshops, commercial and industrial premises) located on the Mons boulevards will enable us to analyse their urban location strategy and to understand how this heterogeneous architectural complex ensured functional proximity just as much as social division.
