Abstract/Description:
This narrative research study includes first year elementary teachers who are teaching in a diverse student population educational setting. This study, framed in the theory of Culturally Responsive Teaching, is focused on the preparation of new teachers to teach diverse student populations by their teacher preparatory programs. Many of todays first year teachers face the challenge of meeting the needs of very diverse classrooms. As such, first year teachers must understand and be able to support diverse student groups which include students of poverty and culturally diverse students. This requires a high level of instructional skills but also a deep understanding of how to meet the needs of each student. Teacher preparatory programs must build the capacity for pre-service new teachers to support the diverse needs of todays classrooms. The purpose of this research study is to examine the components of teacher preparatory programs which provide prospective teacher candidates the experiences and opportunities to build a skill set to meet the needs of all students within a diverse classroom. In the case of four participants, the findings support their underpreparedness in their work with diverse student populations.
