Abstract/Description:
This qualitative single case study examined the perceptions and experiences of student veterans that had engaged with veterans' services on campus. The goal was to identify how the student veterans perceived those services to have helped with their academic persistence. The study was completed on a rural commuter campus in upstate New York. Semi-structured interviews of two staff members and five students were conducted along with observations of one-on-one meetings between student veterans and veteran services staff. Four major themes emerged: student veterans' transitions to college were positively influenced by the supports provided by the Veteran Services Department, student veterans' socialization on campus was positively impacted by their interactions with veteran services, veteran services had a positive impact on boosting student veteran self-efficacy through providing services that met their specific needs, and veteran services provided immediate affiliation for student veterans' having a positive impact on their college experience. These findings were situated within the context of the Theory of Student Departure in Commuter Colleges and Universities developed by Braxton, Hirschy, and McClendon. The findings provided credence to the "one stop" concept for student veteran services, identified the need for dedicated space for student veterans, and pointed to the need for an orientation dedicated to student veterans to showcase their services and provide pertinent information.
