New media and technological development affect all aspects of society, including the perception
of the digital born generation and their coexistence in physical and virtual space. Adapting to the
needs of its audience, museums are taking up online spaces and offer virtual tours and various
online content on their websites and social networks. The time of the pandemic caused by the new
Corona virus and recommendations for physical distancing and isolation additionally emphasize
the need for content that we can follow from our homes, from our personal screens. Consequently, museums are entering the course of digital transformation much faster than predicted. This
situation leads to many issues considering the success of online museum content and the needs
of the virtual audience: who this audience really is, whether they expect content different from
those in museum buildings, how much time they will spend wandering through the virtual museum,
whether and how should the audience... be engaged, what are the recent examples of the good
practices in Serbia. In this paper, we strive to open at least some of the many questions related
to the research of the audience of the virtual museum. Finally, we discuss on the potentials of the
digital space, the transmedia museum, audience participation and co-creation between curators
and visitors as sustainable principles for museum transformation in the future.
