The mortality rate of the persons with autism and Rett syndrome
Mortalitet osoba sa autizmom i Retovim sindromom
The life expectancy of the persons with autism and Rett syndrome is of interest to their parents and medical and social service providers as well. All of the available reports suggest that life expectancy of the persons with these pervasive disorders is significantly reduced. Standardized mortality ratio in persons with autistic spectrum disorders ranges from 2 to more than 50 for different causes of death. It is worth mentioning that life expectancy of the girls with Rett syndrome is even more reduced. It is believed that main causes of sudden death in both groups are: seizures and cardiac arrest. Some other causes such as suffocation and drowning are specific for autism. Medical professionals, service providers and parents should be acquainted with possible mortality risks in order to provide necessary treatment and support for these vulnerable groups.
