Abstract Background: College days are when students are predisposed to get stressed from theire studies in college, human relations and the problem of social identity. However, it is rare for young people to c...onsult with a psychiatrist or a psychologist for mental health problems. We have launched the project entitled "the empirical study on the improvement in mental health of university students using a smartphone app," as a mental health measure aimed at youth. Methods: This project was conducted from December 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019. The smartphone app (App), which we independently developed, was installed on the student's smartphones, and a questionnaire survey and psychological tests (Link Stigma Scale, CES-D, GHQ-12) were performed on the same day. After using the App for two weeks, we conducted the same questionnaire survey and psychological tests again. Results: Thirty-one students participated in this study. More than 80% of students had a good impression of the design and usability of the App. We conduced a questionnaire survey on the need for a mental health app, and found that the number of students who answered "very necessary" or "necessary" siginificantly increased (Wilcoxon signed-rank test, p = 0.011). The results of log data analysis indicated that most students used the App on the first day of the this study; however, the number of users dropped to half on the second day and further decreased to one-fifth on the ninth day, suggesting that students used the App every few days, but not daily. Conclusions: We developed the smartphone App designed for university students. The increase in students who understood the need for the mental health care App suggested that the App may be an effective tool for enlightening students in mental health care.show more
