Abstract The aim of this study is to clarify importance of knowledge of the children in Foucault’s theory of power. Foucault often makes references to children in analyzing the process about generalization of ...psychiatric power. Thus, in this study, the author read the 1974 “Abnormal” lecture, which criticizes psychiatric power. Especially, the lectures on February 12th and March 19th are important. In the former, Foucault details how psychiatric power could be distributed to society. And, in the latter, Foucault indicated that psychiatry had to be connected with the science of child development in order to medicine. After reading this lecture, this paper will clarify how psychiatry becomes science and technology by targeting children. As a result of this reading, the following points became clear. First, Psychiatry, following a law enacted in 1838, treated behavioral deviations. As a result, psychiatry no longer targeting mental illness. psychiatry used neurology, became a science and technique for controlling all behavior. Psychiatry has become a medicine that can control dangerous behavior. Secondly, in a lecture on March 19th, Foucault focused on the case which Charles Jouy was imprisoned. The reason is that through this incident, we can understand what people feel danger. It’s a imbecility based on a developmental arrest. Thus, psychiatry needs developmental science to control dangerous behavior. After this, psychiatry has been observing all the behaviors of children in order to control imbecility adults. Hence, psychiatry needed to be connected with the neurology of development and developmental arrest. Psychiatry, which became a true medicine in connection with neurology, generalized psychiatric power through children. The conclusions of this study are as follows: By connecting the science of children with psychiatry, psychiatric power earned a norm to judge whether all behaviors are normal or abnormal. children aren’t the subject of the generalization of psychiatric power, but the requirement of the generalization of that power.show more
