Absztrakt

The main objective of my thesis is to investigate the process which resulted in the disappearance of grammatical gender from the English language, from the Old English Period with some reference to the Insular Period up to the Early Modern English times. In the discussion of the transition of English from a grammatical gender system to a natural gender system, due consideration will be given to the linguistic and social factors that contributed to this transition and the investigation will follow a chronological order. After giving a short theoretical overview of gender in Chapter One, I wish to give a separate chapter to the changes concerning the development of the English gender system in each period in the history of the language. Thus, Chapter Two gives a brief insight into the state of gender before the emergence of English as an independent language, then Chapter Three outlines changes affecting gender in Old English, Chapter Four elaborates on gender in Middle English times, Chapter Five focuses on the Early Modern English period and finally I wish to give a short summary of the state of gender in Present-Day English in Chapter Six.
