My topic is Barbara Demick’s description of North Korea in Nothing to Envy compared with George Orwell’s 1984. A lot of questions arise about the situation and lifestyle of the people in North Korea. How do people can live there, surrounded by those terrible circumstances? What makes them stay? How can be a dictator so cruel to his nation? The whole country is covered by some mysterious facts and horrifying news. Some countries want to help them, some want to attack them but there is no way that somebody does not hear or care about this extraordinary peninsula. Its people are under control, lives in totalitarianism. The ones who have read 1984 by George Orwell unintentionally notice the similarities between the imaginary London and the real, actual North Korea.
