Wera Meyer-Waldeck y Hilde Weström: dos arquitectas en la Interbau Berlín 1957

Abstract

Con la incorporación de jóvenes mujeres estudiantes a las escuelas superiores alemanas, tras la Primera Guerra Mundial, un orden establecido simbólico tendrá que ser revisado. Surgen las estudiantes como un nuevo modelo que durante el siglo XX va a cimentar la identidad de la mujer profesional. Wera Meyer-Waldeck y Hilde Weström estudian arquitectura en dos instituciones diferentes, la Bauhaus y la Escuela Técnica Superior de Berlín Charlottenburg. Aunque sus periodos de formación no llegan a solaparse, el nazismo y la guerra suponen para ellas un periodo difícil. Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, sus carreras profesionales se tocarán por primera y última vez en 1957, en la Interbau de Berlín. El espíritu de un nuevo modo de habitar, promovido desde la muestra "La ciudad del mañana", fue defendido por ellas con una doble implicación: como responsables de unas instalaciones habitacionales expositivas y como asesoras técnicas ante la ciudadanía. Estas arquitectas constituyeron el nexo de unión, a través de su labor didáctica en temas de vivienda y tiempo libre, entre los visitantes de la muestra y las nuevas teorías para incentivar una vida más saludable y participativa en el interior de los hogares.

With the incorporation of young women students to German Technical Schools after the First World War, a symbolic established order will have to be revised. Female students emerge as a new model that during the twentieth century will cement the identity of the professional woman. Wera Meyer-Waldeck and Hilde Weström study architecture at two different institutions, the Bauhaus and the Berlin Higher Technical School Charlottenburg. Although their education periods do not overlap, Nazism and war represent for them a difficult period. After the Second World War, their professional careers meet for the first and last time, at the 1957 Interbau in Berlin. The spirit of a new way of habiting, promoted by the exhibition “The city of tomorrow”, was defended by them with a double implication: as the responsible for expositive housing installations and as technical advisors to the public. These architects formed the link of union, through their didactic work in terms of housing and free time, between visitors of the exhibition and the new theories to ncourage a healthier and more participatory life inside homes.
