Virtuti et merito. El reconocimiento oficial de Alexander von Humboldt en España

Abstract

[EN] This article studies the recognition of Humboldt and his works at a late moment of his life, during the reign of Isabel II (1844-68), when in 1847 he received in Potsdam the Gran Cruz of the Real y Distinguida Órden Española de Carlos III, founded by Carlos III in 1771 and given since then to selected person for special merits related to the Court. We also publish the unknown letter that Humboldt sent to the prince Sotomayor to express his gratefulness for the decoration awarded to him (9th of August 1848). In this study are also included his prior appointments as correspondent member of the Real Jardín Botánico, the Real Academia Médica Matritense as well as the Real Academia de Ciencias, whose president Antonio Remón Zarco del Valle seems to have a significant importance related to the political recognition of the reign of Isabel II by the central European governments.

[ES] En este artículo estudiamos el reconocimiento de Humboldt y su obra en un momento tardío de su vida, ya en el reinado de Isabel II (1844-68), cuando recibió en 1847 en Potsdam la Gran Cruz de la Real y Distinguida Órden Española de Carlos III, que fue fundada por Carlos III en el año 1771 y se da desde entonces a ciudadanos selectos por méritos especiales relacionados con la corte. Publicamos también la carta desconocida que envió Humboldt al duque de Sotomayor dando las gracias por la entrega de la condecoración (9-8-1848). Incluimos también en este estudio los nombramientos previos como miembro correspondiente del Real Jardín Botánico, de la Real Academia Médica Matritense y de la Real Academia de Ciencias, donde era presidente Antonio Remón Zarco del Valle, personaje que parece tener mucha importancia en el reconocimiento político de la reina Isabel II por las potencias centroeuropeas.

[DE] Dieser Artikel untersucht die Anerkennung Humboldts sowie seines Werkes zu einem späten Zeitpunkt seines Lebens, bereits unter der Regentschaft von Isabel II. (1844-68), als er im Jahr 1847 in Potsdam das Gran Cruz des Real y Distinguida Órden Española de Carlos III. erhielt, welcher im Jahr 1771 von Carlos III. gegründet worden war und seitdem an auserwählte Bürger für besondere Dienste im Zusammenhang mit dem Königshaus vergeben wird. Desweiteren wird hier ein bislang unbekannter Brief veröffentlicht, den Humboldt an den Fürsten Sotomayor gerichtet hatte und in welchem er ihm für die Verleihung dieser Auszeichnung dankte (9.8.1848). Zudem werden in dieser Studie auch frühere Ernennungen Humboldts als Korrespondent des Real Jardín Botánico untersucht, sowie der Real Academia Médica Matritense und der Real Academia de Ciencias, deren Präsident Antonio Remón Zarco del Valle eine große Bedeutung zuzukommen scheint im Zusammenhang mit der politischen Anerkennung der Königin Isabel II. durch die zentraleuropäischen Regierungen.
