La versión árabe del Estatuto de Autonomía para el Sahara occidental de 1974

Abstract

[EN] In 1958, Western Sahara became a Spanish province. Since Spanish was the only official language, translating into Arabic the legislation for the territory was quite unusual. There were, however, some exceptions, like the Statute of Autonomy (1974). This paper provides, first, a brief introduction to translation activities in the former Spanish colony and some information on the process of translating this important historical document; secondly, the Arabic version of the Statute of Autonomy is published for the first time and briefly commented upon. The Arabic text is accompanied by the Spanish sourcetext, which in turn is compared with the final official version of the Statute of Autonomy as sanctioned by General Franco.

[ES] En 1958, el Sahara Occidental se convirtió en provincia española. Por ello, la traducción al árabe de la legislación del Territorio era algo inhabitual. No faltaron, sin embargo, excepciones. El Estatuto de Autonomía de 1974 es una de ellas. El presente artículo se divide en dos partes fundamentales. En la primera se ofrece información sobre el proceso de traducción de este importante documento histórico y una breve introducción a la actividad traductora en la antigua colonia española. En la segunda, se edita por vez primera y se analiza brevemente la versión árabe del Estatuto y el texto fuente español de la traducción. Éste, a su vez, se compara con el tenor español del Estatuto finalmente sancionado por el General Franco.
