Ser voluntário na Deficiência Intelectual: Quais as barreiras

Abstract

Grande parte das organizações sem fins lucrativos têm necessidade de trabalho voluntário. Contudo, a captação de pessoas dispostas a doar o seu tempo nem sempre é fácil. Se por um lado muitos investigadores defendem que os voluntários são muito heterogéneos entre si, por outro existem vários estudos que associam determinadas características ao comportamento de um voluntário, sendo que os benefícios inerentes à atividade de voluntariado podem ser muitos, contudo nem todos os indivíduos têm a mesma predisposição para o voluntariado. Na área académica existem muitos estudos sobre o voluntariado nas mais diversas áreas (ambiental, empresarial, escolar, entre outros). Contudo, os estudos sobre o voluntariado na área da deficiência e mais especificamente na deficiência intelectual são muito poucos. Assim, surge o presente trabalho, cujo principal objetivo é analisar as barreiras ao voluntariado junto de pessoas com deficiência intelectual, e posteriormente apontar caminhos que conduzam à motivação destes indivíduos. O presente trabalho encontra-se organizado em quatro capítulos. Iniciamos com a revisão de literatura, onde é apresentado o conceito de voluntariado e a sua importância, bem como as motivações e barreiras ao seu exercício de uma forma mais generalizada. Segue-se o tema da Deficiência Intelectual passando depois a apresentar o voluntariado nesta área específica, bem como as suas motivações e barreiras. O capítulo seguinte apresenta a metodologia utilizada, seguindo-se apresentação e discussão dos resultados. O trabalho termina com a apresentação de conclusões e um conjunto de possíveis estratégias de captação de voluntários para área específica da deficiência intelectual.

Most non-profit organizations need volunteer work. However, attracting people willing to donate their time is not always easy. If, on one hand, a lot of researchers argue that some volunteers may be very dissimilar, on the other hand, there are studies that associate specific features to a volunteer’s behavior, and the inherent benefits to volunteering can be considerable, however not all individuals may have the same predisposition to volunteerism. In an academic field, there are several studies about volunteerism in a range of areas (environmental, academic, among others). However, studies about volunteerism, in an area like disabled individuals and specifically those with intellectual disability, is not very frequent to exist. That’s the purpose of this work, which main goal is to analyze the barriers to voluntaryism in people with intellectual disability and determining paths that lead to the motivation of those individuals. This paper is organized with four chapters. We begin with a literature review, where it is presented the concept of volunteerism and its importance, as well as the motivations and barriers to implement it in a more generalized way. Then we have the theme of intellectual disability, which then is followed by volunteering in this specific area, as well as its motivations and barriers. The next chapter describes the methodology that was used, followed by the presentation and discussion of results. The last chapter has the presentation of findings and a set of possible strategies for attracting volunteers for the specific area of intellectual disability.
