Abstract(s)
Abstract: Heritage gains meaning and relevance for having a social and community expression. It is the expression of the values, principles and ways of living of a group of individuals, who share common elements, and who are part of an identity and a collective memory. Currently, heritage acquires new meanings and expressions, emerging new types of assets. The heritage sets, the vernacular heritage and the recent maritime heritage are examples of these kind of assets. The streets or fishing neighbourhoods are significant examples of heritage sets that urge to be identified, valued and preserved. The fishermen's houses present very characteristic and singular elements that generally contribute to the whole set they are in, as they are also, individually, a type of vernacular or rural construction with heritage value, assigned to the maritime heritage type. Changes in the fishing activity, in social ways of living, and the new demands of housing, as well as the removal of the connection to the sea that Portugal used to have, led to the lack of interest in this type of built heritage and, consequently, its distortion and destruction, and thus losing an important part of the expression of the Portuguese fishing communities. The main aim of the research is to provide knowledge about this type of Portuguese rural and maritime heritage, through the identification, analysis and development of indicators and values; also contributing to raise awareness to the need of value and safeguard of this heritage. Presently there are no specific publications related to fishing architecture; and the existing ones are of social, ethnological and anthropological nature. Thus, a review of authors was conducted, focusing on issues such as the vernacular and rural heritage, property sets, and maritime heritage. The study conducted, based on the analysis of the Fishermen Street in Caminha, was carried out through documental research and the qualitative analysis of seven case studies. The dissertation is developed throughout seven chapters that follow the stages of research: theoretical basis (Cap.2), historical and spatial evolution of the fishing village (chapter 3), historical evolution and spatial analysis of the Fishermen Street in Caminha as a whole (chapter 4), observation forms and analysis of the study data of the seven selected case studies (cap.5.); the exchange of data between the literature review and the analysis of the results allowed a systematization of the contents (ch. 6) and a consequent conclusion that meets the objectives initially set (Ch. 7). The research is intended to represent an important and accurate contribution to the knowledge of this type of local heritage in Caminha, aiming at its recovery and protection, and at the raising of awareness to the presence of this heritage along the Portuguese coast, which urges to be given attention and appreciation.
