Abstract
The paintings The Procession of Saint Clare with the Holy Host and The Retreat of the Saracens belong to the series of works painted by Valdés Leal between 1652-1653 to decorate the presbytery walls of the church in the Convent of Saint Clare in Carmona, Seville. At present, they are located in the Upper Chapter House of the Town Hall of Seville, owner of the works. With six years difference between them, both paintings have been restored. The first one between 1990-91 in the Reales Alcázares and the second between 1995-96 in the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage. In both cases, the processes of conservation and restoration consisted of the consolidation of the pictorial support, fixing of the pictorial layer, removal of oxidized varnishes and repaints, plastering of preparation and pictorial layer gaps, chromatic reintegration and final protection.
