Abstract
The natural catastrophes that have impacted El Salvador have unwrapped the social vulnerability of its population, as well as the imagination of Salvadoran writers, painters and musicians. However, Salvadorans seem to live unaware that volcano eruptions, earthquakes, plagues, wars and floods have shaped the character of Salvadoran society. The origin of some tragedies in the country lie on its geographic zone. It is hard to understand El Salvador and its neighbors in Central America, without understanding the geopolitical atmosphere, and the imperial dynamics that have undermined its sovereignty and forged its identity. The author goes through a number of catastrophic events from back in the days until the present to demonstrate the absence of highly refined symbolic representation, which come from the arts and literature. The absence of these elements, according to the author, has limited Salvadoran society from internalizing catastrophes and prepare them to react promptly to adversities.
