Fisonomías de lo invisible: Raza y nación en la literatura decimonónica española (1808-1843)

Abstract

Durante el siglo XIX, la idea de raza fue fundamental en el desarrollo del concepto de nación. Las afinidades significativas y dependencia que vinculan a ambos términos han oscilado fundamentalmente en la forma en que estas se expresan, mas siempre manteniendo una naturaleza dual: ambos son factores unificadores y ambos fun-cionan como principios excluyentes. Desde una perspectiva filológica y en un marco estrictamente peninsular, el presente trabajo intenta arrojar luz sobre la naturaleza y manifestación del constructo raza entre 1808 y 1843, así como de los vínculos que guarda con el concepto nación.

During the 19th century, the idea of race was key in the development of the concept of nation. The semantic and dependence that bind together both concepts have fluctuated in their form of expression but always maintaining a dual nature: both are unifying factors and both work as a principle of exclusion. From a philological perspective and within a peninsular frame of reference, this paper tries to shed light about the nature and manifestation of the construct of race in the first half of the nineteenth century between 1808 and 1843, as well as the ties that keep with the concept of nation.
