Her father was a soldier who was imprisoned for three years by the communist government. The US government sponsored families who were Vietnamese veterans of the Vietnam War. Van’s family moved to Southern California in 1985. She discussed the journey of getting used to the life in the U.S. and the hardships of fitting into her neighborhood and school. She also discussed her visits back to Vietnam and how Vietnam has changed compared to when she left for the U.S. She graduated from Cal State Long Beach, which was the time when she met her husband Tin Do in a church group. She is now 35 years old, married to Tin Do, and has a 3-year-old son named Tristan. Currently living in Garden Grove, California, Van works as an analyst at the QBE insurance company.
