O homem na perspectiva de Marcial

Abstract

O presente trabalho propõe esboçar uma visão do homem do século I d.C., na perspectiva de Marco Valério Marcial, poeta bilbilitano que utiliza, como principal argumento dos seus epigramas, a natureza humana. Através de uma escrita realista, caricaturada e despida de preconceitos, o poeta hispânico dá- -nos a conhecer o homem do seu tempo, da forma mais autêntica e fiel, transmitindo, por isso, o que de melhor e de pior tem a essência humana: essas são, pois, “duas faces da mesma moeda”. Marcial, sem pretender moralizar, expõe uma concepção pessoal da vida humana, quando sofre com a desumanidade de alguns cidadãos, com a deslealdade de supostos amigos, com a crise de valores da Urbe, quando sorri pela pureza de uma criança ou pela amizade, quando exalta os valores do homem. A obra deste poeta revela- -se, diante de nós, um testemunho humano de surpreendente actualidade e um contributo para a humanização da nossa cultura.

The intention of the present study is to outline a vision of mankind from the first century AD, in the perspective of Martial, an Hispanic poet who uses human nature, as the main theme argument of his epigrams. Through a realistic writing, caricatured and without prejudice, the Hispanic poet allows us to perceive acknowledge mankind of this me, in an authentic and accurate way, conveying, there fore, the best and worst of the human essence: those are “two sizes of the same coin”. Without intending to moralize, Martial states a personal concept of human life, when he suffers with the treachery of some citizens, with the disloyalty of assumed friends, with the crisis of values of the City, when he smiles due to the purity of a child and friendship, when he emanates the importance of mankind. The work of such poet reveals to be a surprisingly updated human witness and a contribution towards the humanization of our culture.
