Introduction: Tobacco consumption is the first cause of preventable death in the world. Clinical interventions to achieve cessation have been shown to be effective but it is necessary to study them in depth in Spanish population. Objective: To analyze the efficacy of a multicomponent intervention program combining pharmacological treatment with Varenicline along with a brief intervention based on Guided Self-Change (GSC) Treatment (Sobell & Sobell, 1993).
Method: A total of 181 tobacco users who had a nicotine dependence, derived from the Pneumology Service of the General University Hospital of Alicante (HGUA) participated, 68 of which met the inclusion criteria. Sociodemographic, medical, consumer and psychological variables (nicotine dependence, motivation for change, anxiety and depression) were evaluated. Descriptive, bivariate and covariance analyzes were performed. Results: Pharmacological intervention and multicomponent intervention, combining drug use and psychological therapy, have shown their efficacy in smoking cessation (p <.01); however, psychological therapy has shown added benefits such as lower number of withdrawal symptoms (p <.01) and fewer weeks of drug use (p <.05) as well as better abstinence rates.
Conclusions: Both interventions have been effective, but psychological therapy offers benefits for coping with relapse prevention and maintaining long-term abstinence. Longer-term studies and longitudinal follow-up are needed beyond week 24 to determine the effects of dropout on the health of patients with long-term respiratory disease.
