Post-truth is a deceitful euphemism because it refers to those messages that invoke
emotions in the receivers when they should be invited to develop conclusions.
This phenomenon is comparable to propaganda, advertising and political marketing
because they all show one part of the information or altered information. They use
seductive language to cover expressions that, if pronounced literally, would make the
public reflect or provoke resistance.
On the contrary, Journalism defends contrasted, clear and truthful information.
However, it is mass media and the development of technology that have opened the way
to post-truth. Firstly, the predominance of entertainment on television and the
dependence on images on the news contribute to the simplification of the informative
discourse; as a consequence, it falls into disinformation. To compete with television, the
press is introduced into new areas that try to reveal the private life of public figures in
an attempt to manifest transparency.
Finally, the internet is the ecosystem where post-truth is born, since communication
cabinets, publicists, journalists, politicians, public figures and users become both
transmitters and receivers of information. By probability, where there is more
communication, there is more deception.
Journalism is fundamental in the development of a democracy. Its professional
deontology is applicable to post-truth era. The study of history is also important because
it enables journalists to avoid falling into the trap of reproducing the discourses of
power so that they become its spokesmen.
