Abstract

This article aims at discovering, on the basis of the available literature, whether and to what extent the Odessa topos has penetrated into the German collective consciousness. Already a preliminary review of the available German-language texts that describe the Black Sea metropolis reveals that for Germans the topos of Odessa is primarily the stairs. Quotes, which will be cited below, show that this is a topic often discussed in German press and literature. All German-language sources about the city listed under this article contain a reference to this structure. Most texts in German about Odessa start from a references to the stairs – a specific stereotyping can be seen here, a creation of a topos in the sense of "an argumentation pattern".
