Abstract
seguintes objetivos de investigação, a saber: i) identificar competências
A análise documental e a observação direta
diretor no exercício do cargo.

In order to find answers to the purpose of this investigation, referred above, were defined three research objectives, namely: i) identify competences essential to the exercise of the position of school principal, according to the teachers' perception; ii) understand aspects inherent to the exercise of the position of school principal, from the perspective of teachers; and iii) develop knowledge about the competency profile of a school principal, with reference to the perception of teachers. This study took an essentially qualitative nature and the case study has been adopted as research strategy. The empirical study took place in the school year 2016 out in in a Teacher Training School in the city of Benguela. The questionnaire survey was the main data collection technique and it was answered by fifty teachers (n=50). Documentary analysis and direct observation were adopted as complementary means of data collection. A simple statistical analysis was the privileged data processing technique. As main results of the present investigation the participating teachers considered that the position of school principal should be exercised by a teacher with specialized training in the area of school management and administration. Leadership skills, ability to work as a team, communication skills, human resources management skills, intellectual and managerial knowledge are assumed for the participating teachers as the main competencies to be privileged by a school principal in the exercise of the position.
