Los obispos del Tucumán a la sombra de los jesuitas (1714-1740): Provisión y administración episcopal

Abstract

A lo largo del reinado de Felipe V, la Compañía de Jesús gozó del monopolio del confesionario regio, lo que le permitió intervenir en la configuración del cuadro episcopal a escala de la Monarquía. Sin embargo, los sucesivos quiebres en las relaciones hispano-romanas afectaron la normal provisión de obispados, generando prolongadas sedes vacantes. La antigua diócesis del Tucumán no estuvo ajena a esta dinámica general, puesto que estuvo carente de pastor entre 1704 y 1715, cuando tomó posesión de la mitra Alonso del Pozo y Silva, inaugurando así una sucesión casi ininterrumpida de prelados hasta 1740. El propósito de este artículo es recuperar el rol que tuvieron los jesuitas en el nombramiento de los titulares de la diócesis y revelar el modo en que participaron directa o indirectamente en la administración del obispado en sus tres instituciones de gobierno: el cabildo catedralicio, la audiencia episcopal y la visita diocesana.

Throughout the reign of Philip V, the Society of Jesus enjoyed the monopoly of the royal confessional, which allowed it to intervene in the configuration of the episcopal cadre on the scale of the Monarchy. However, the successive breakdowns in Spanish–Roman relations affected the normal provision of bishoprics, generating prolonged vacant sees. The old diocese of Tucumán was not alien to this general dynamic, since it was without a pastor between 1704 and 1715, when Alonso del Pozo y Silva took possession of the mitre, thus inaugurating an almost uninterrupted succession of prelates until 1740. The purpose of this article is to recover the role played by the Jesuits in the appointment of the incumbents of the diocese and to reveal the way in which they participated directly or indirectly in the administration of the bishopric in its three institutions of government: the cathedral chapter, the diocesan visitation, and the ecclesiastical justice.
