Abstract
A method for monitoring the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans independently of iron oxidation was developed. This method involved the analysis of protein using the Cobmassie Blue protein-binding assay. It was found to be free from interference by the inorganic ions present in T. ferrooxidans culture medium. The effect of ferrous iron concentrations and mixtures of ferrous and ferric irons on the rate of iron oxidation by T. ferrooxidans in batch culture was determined. The exponential iron oxidation rate was not affected by the ferric iron concentration per se but rather by the ferrousferric ratio.
