Abstract

I attempt a reconstruction of the pronominal enclitics of the smallest subgroup including Warlpiri, the Yapa (previously Ngarga) subgroup of the Pama-Nyungan languages. Then I present the variation in modern Warlpiri pronominal enclitics as a basis for inference about the development of some of their properties. I conclude that there is tension between competing models: a template, or phrase-structure rules.
