Abstract

This presentation will explore how artificial intelligence (AI) is changing education and how teachers can support student success in this changing environment. Based on the idea that machines can simulate human cognition, the concept of AI has been around since the nineteen fifties. Today, we see AI emerging in all aspects of higher education and will fundamentally alter the role of the teacher and the classroom itself (Marr, 2018). Instruction techniques need to provide a “robot-proof” education that will do more than fill students heads with facts and information (Aoun, 2018). Students of today will be working alongside AI. To be able to compete with AI, students are going to have to be able to invent, create, and discover things which robots cannot. Aoun (2018) creates a new discipline, Humanics, which dramatically changes education to build upon student ingenuity. His framework is based upon three new literacies: data literacy, technological literacy, and human literacy. Aoun, J. (2018). Robot-proof: higher education in the age of artificial intelligence.
