Street art as a communication tool for raising awareness about Covid-19 in Kampala
Abstract
The use of Covid-19 visual communication street as a tool for social change has manifested itself in and around Kampala during the period of the virus outbreak. This has proved that visual communication street art has been a major tool for promoting social change in communities around the city of Kampala. In this research I have established how street art has been used as a communication tool for raising awareness about COVID-19 in Kampala, Uganda., promoted the use of street art as a tool for social change and visual communication., The research has further analyzed the engagement of the public in the use of street art as a communication tool for raising awareness about COVID-19 in Kampala, Uganda. Three research questions were posed,
(i). How has street art been used as a communication tool for raising awareness about COVID-19 in Kampala? (ii). How can street art be promoted as a communication tool for raising awareness about COVID-19 in Kampala? (iii). How has the public engaged in the use of street art as a communication tool for raising awareness about COVID-
19 in Kampala? I have investigated the questions through a vivid ethnographic account using both primary and secondary sources. Through questionnaire and observations with people that mattered as far as this research was concerned.
Secondary data was collected through literary sources, such as books, journals, research papers, newspapers and the internet. The findings of this research enabled academic scholars, institutions of higher learning and other stake holders since it has covered and documented the use of Covid-19 visual communication street art and helped to get a better way to promote social change in Uganda.
Through this research I have discovered that street art is a very strong communication tool for raising awareness about COVID-19 especially in Kampala.
