Abstract
At present day, globalization is being observed as a new stage of capitalist development. In this process, İt was concentrated the flows of cultural products from industrialized western countries to non-west. And this process caused the globalization and standardization of media contents. With the heavy import of western media contents or the replication of western media contents cause to dissemination of the dominant values of western culture. As a result of this process, non capitalist values and relations disappear and the capitalist culture of western countries become dominant in the globe. In this dissertation the effect of the quiz shows, which were produced firstly in the western countries such as USA Great Britain and Italy, to the cultural formation and ideological result on Turkish society. So, Who wants to be a millionaire? was selected as a sample programme and analysed in the context of cultural imperialism thesis. First of all, the twenty programmes which were broadcast in the period of October, I, 2003 and December, 29, 2003 were recorded. These programmes were applied a simple content analysis so that the values, which were dominant İn these programmes, were revealed. And then it was realized an audience survey to show how these programmes afiect the viewers' attitudes and values. In the survey, the ildmp interview" was used as a data gathering technique. It was interviewed with 26 viewer. At the end of the research process, it was proved that the quiz shows disseminate the dominant values of western countries and the viewers internalized these dominant values as the cultural imperialism thesis claimed. The quiz shows in one hand help to dissemination of the commodities which were produced by the multinational corporations, on the other hand they are used as a ideological apparatus to manipulate and control of cultures and the conscious of the people of the non western countries. In this dissertation the process, in which the cultural imperialism materialized, was analysed.
