Integrating Energy Demand of Manufacturing Resources in Production Planning

Abstract

Electrical energy consumption of production facilities is not properly included in the production planning pro-cess at present. Such a possibility offers optimization potential for companies to save energy and also con-tributes to balancing energy demand and supply given the increasing share of renewable energy resources. The aim of this paper is to provide means in order to consider energy demand comparable to other resources such as personnel or machine capacity available as planning factor in production planning software. To do so we introduce new energy management strategies based on costs or consumption so as to plan the future en-ergy consumption of the production for each machine. The planned energy consumption would then be stored and compared with the actual figure to refine the model. In order to help its development, this research relies on a case study with an Austrian MES-software development company.
