Abstract/Description:
This picture shows the view looking out one of the windows of the building (Taino Tower) that is being constructed. The walls are unfinished, and the steel beams used in their construction are clearly visible. Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción purchased the former Shawmut Congregational Church (gutted by fire in 1978), and developed a 27-unit mixed-income condominium project on the site. They called the new building Taino Tower, after the original inhabitants of Puerto Rico. The project maintained the church tower and the church's original arched doors. The condos were put on the market in 1991.
Acquisition:
Donated by Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción.
Funding:
This project was partially funded with federal assistance from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
