Genevieve of Brabant’s legend was very popular from the 15th down to the 20th century. It was evidence of the theme of the queen’s adultery at the end of the Middle Ages. The obvious precedent of Marie of Brabant, whom her husband, the Count Palatine of the Rhine, had executed in 1256, was the mere prologue of a series of scandals, which removed women from power. Genevieve’s tale was acting as a sublimation of that disgrace.
