Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) was a painter, draftsman and printmaker active in the Dutch republic. Art historians often try to explain some of Goltzius’ innovative painting ideas and techniques by pointing to his background as printmaker. My paper investigates the possibility that not just his background as an engraver, but especially his familiarity with the work of glass artists inspired him to make his highly innovative paintings. As such this research sheds new light on how ideas and techniques moved between and were translated into different mediums. The contemporary bibliographer Karel van Mander recorded that Goltzius’ father and younger brother were glass artists. He claims that Goltzius as a child was trained as a glass artist, a trait which he still would have practised in his spare time. For Van Mander, this is a reason to sometimes look at Goltzius’ painting techniques through the lens of glass artistry. When we do the same, some of Goltzius’ techniques such has his grisaille with yellow paintings or his diamond shape frames clearly seem to echo practices in stained glass windows. Some contemporary accounts reveal that these glass inspired works were perceived as different type of art impossible to comprehend and categorise.
