Entender la Lonja es entender los inicios de nuestra modernidad. Se acabaron las construcciones centenarias y el poder dual de reyes y obispos. Un nuevo colectivo entra y acompañará a las artes hasta los inicios del siglo XX, estos son los mercaderes y los comerciantes que se hicieron fuertes durante los siglos XIII y XIV, y piden pertenecer al gobierno y tener un edificio que los represente.
La Lonja de Mallorca es un edificio del siglo XV emplazada en Ciutat de Mallorca en un antiguo barrio extramuros, el Raval de Mar. Guillem Sagrera, el autor del edificio, es de una generación de artistas que nació a finales del siglo XIV y desarrolló su práctica al final de un ciclo e inició un nuevo modo de hacer.
Aprendieron los oficios del siglo XIV pero trabajaron con las nuevas condiciones del siglo XV. Conocían la geología del territorio, la talla de la piedra en canteras, el transporte, la labra de ésta, el arte de montear, la construcción de cimbas de madera para la construcción de bóvedas, el elevamiento de éstas y otras tantas cosas más.
La Lonja del Colegio de Mercadería no solo será el nuevo edificio que los represente, sino también un nuevo modo de construir la ciudad y de concebir el espacio interior.
To understand La Lonja is to understand the beginnings of the
modern times. The epoch of the dual power of kings and bishops
and the buildings whose construction lasted centuries
is over. A new group comes in and will accompany the arts up
the early twentieth century. They are merchants and traders
who became strong during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries
and now wish to belong to the Kingdom’s government
and have a building that would represent them. La Lonja de Mallorca is a fifteenth-century building located in
Ciutat de Mallorca in the Raval de Mar, an old neighborhood
outside the walls. The author of the building, Guillem Sagrera,
pertains to the generation of artists born in the late fourteenth
century, who started to work at the end of an epoch and developed
a new way of building.
These artists learned all trades related to construction of the
fourteenth century, but worked under the new conditions of
the fifteenth century. They knew the geology, the work and the
size of the stone quarries, their transportation, how to build
wooden formwork for construction of vaults, how to lift these,
and many other things.
La Lonja of the College of Merchants will be not merely the
new building for this trade, but a new way of building the city
and perceive the interior space.
