Putting in a gable Subedi, Prakash

Description

Since tall houses are not encouraged by the new earthquake resistant building codes after the 2015 earthquake and it is also expensive to build multi-storey houses, people have been building one-storey, one-room houses such as this one. The addition of a gable however helps add space as it extends the ceiling/roof height and also it fits in with the Nepali style of sloped roofs. Taken during the 1st phase of fieldwork conducted by the research team based at Social Science Baha in Kathmandu, Nepal, as part of the SSHRC Partnership Development Grant, ‘Expertise, Labour and Mobility in Nepal’s Post-Conflict, Post-Disaster Reconstruction’.
