Scope and Contents

This is a collection of early to mid-20th-century bookplates from Finland. Most of the bookplates belonged to private individuals, although the collection does contain a few institutional bookplates from various library, university, or social organizations, or businesses.

Most of the bookplates are mounted on paper cards, measuring roughly 9.5 x 6.5 inches. Some of the mounts and some of the bookplates themselves bear evidence of various inscriptions, including artist and date. A sampling of the artists represented in this collection includes: Olof Eriksson, Axel Haartman, Väinö Mäkelä, Erkki Tanttu, and Bjarne E. Uttuslien.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Yale Bookplate Collection was formerly housed in Sterling Memorial Library. The collection was incorporated into the Arts of the Book Collection in 1984 and then moved to the Seeley G. Mudd Library in 1990. In 2011 it was transferred to the Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library.
