Frederick W. Beinecke collector's files
Scope and Contents
The files consist of inventories and a card index to Frederick W. Beinecke's Western Americana collection. The collection documented in this material was donated to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, chiefly between 1960 and 1971. The inventories (Series I.) document Frederick W. Beinecke's larger donations, including a collection on the Mexican War in 1960, a collection of printed material in 1962, and material donated at the time of his death in 1971. The card index (Series II.) documents Frederick W. Beinecke's acquisition of material in the 1950s and 1960s and includes documentation of provenance and acquisition, and descriptions provided by booksellers. The cards also include notes on handling of the material at Yale. The index cards informed descriptions of material in catalog records in Orbis, Yale University Library's catalog.

Processing Information
Collections are processed to a variety of levels, depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived research value, the availability of staff, competing priorities, and whether or not further accruals are expected. The library attempts to provide a basic level of preservation and access for all collections, and does more extensive processing of higher priority collections as time and resources permit.
This collection received a basic level of processing, including rehousing and minimal organization, in 2012. Information included in the Description of Papers note and Collection Contents section is drawn from information supplied with the collection and from an initial survey of the contents. Folder titles appearing in the contents list below are often based on those provided by the creator or previous custodian. Titles have not been verified against the contents of the folders in all cases.
This finding aid may be updated periodically to account for new acquisitions to the collection and/or revisions in arrangement and description.
