Scope and Contents
The Hipolite Dumas Papers consist of correspondence and orders relating to Dumas's service in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During the period covered by the papers, 1813-1828, Dumas rose from the rank of lieutenant to captain and served on engineering projects around New Orleans, Mobile, at Forts Calhoun and Monroe in Hampton, Virginia, and in Newcastle, Delaware. The papers include complimentary letters from Dumas's commanding officer Charles Gratiot and other documents which mention the dissolution of a court martial.
The library purchased the Dumas Papers from R.K. Black. They were transferred from the Miscellaneous Manuscripts Collection (MS 352) in 1985.
